Fun Runs - This is my guide to some great events on the running calendar that I’ve tried, tested and recommend.

parkrun - locations around the world every single Saturday morning

No matter where you are on the planet, well in over 1000 locations anyway, you're going to find a friendly, FREE 5km run every Saturday at the local parkrun.
If you're not a runner but love to volunteer, you can still be part of parkrun, see how.

run for the kids - annually the Sunday before Good Friday

An event very close to my heart, having been a patient of Melbourne's Royal Children's Hospital, it is very important to me to raise as much money as possible for this world class place of healing.  There are two courses, 16km and 5km.  Runners will enjoy the challenging 16km course that takes you through the City Link tunnel and over the Bolte bridge.  The shorter 5km course is ideal for joggers and families who wish to walk together.  This run is unique in that over half of your entry fee goes to the hospital.

In 2016 I ran with the Fly with Gus team and we raised almost $30k for the hospital

emer casey fun run - Jells Park, every May

A registered Irish charity established in 2008 in the memory of Emer Casey to raise funds for research into ovarian cancer.  Join more than 600 other runners in either the 5km or 10km distance.

mornington running festival - every september

The Mornington Running Festival and Health & Lifestyle Expo looks like the ideal spot to kick off the spring running season. The Expo is on the Saturday and the running events are on Sunday which is Father's Day so you can bring the fam along and make a day of it.  There's even something for the kids with a 1km dash.  For the not so little there are 5km and 10km fun run/walk and the popular Half Marathon 21.1km distance. The event supports Beyond blue.  I completed the 10km run in 2015 and the course was undulating.

the harvest run - every september in the Yarra Valley

My new favourite run of 2016 saw competitors take off in the inaugural Harvest Run in the Yarra Valley.  There are 2 distances, 6km and 13km with all runners finishing on the harness track and then moving to the celebration area where wine, cheese and pancakes await.  Definitely one to check out, full details here.

the city2sea - every November in Melbourne

This is my kind of event, one that has you running past the major scenic icons of beautiful Melbourne and finishing at the glorious St Kilda Beach and all without the need for headphones to inspire you because Run Out Loud brings the beats to you. There's DJs, big bands, cheer leaders and dancers to distract you from the effort of your 5km or 15km run.  You can also help raise much needed funds for the charity of your choice.  I've done the 15km before so this time I am looking forward to giving the 5km course a go.  Come and join me and jog away those post marathon blues. Register here. Entry fee varies according to age and course distance.
