The excitement I feel when I see a new café opening is palpable. The prospect of rewarding my taste buds with some new exotic food, untried flavours and ingredient combos brings a huge smile to this freckled face. So you can imagine the joy I felt when my fur children and I passed by a former shoe shop to see that it had been beautifully transformed into a delightful café.
Agi and her chef husband, Jonathan Nolan, run this little gem that has now been opened a month. Located diagonally across the road from the Albert Park tram stop at the end of Bridport Street that was crying out for some café love. The pale blue and white tables and chairs on the foot path let you know that No 84 are open for business, 7 days a week in fact, for breakfast, lunch and your afternoon chai with a house made cookie or three.
On a gloomy Saturday I made my first visit to No. 84 and was instantly glad that I did. I received a warm welcome from Wilson, the very happy barista, and was cheered to see the bench seat in the window was available for me to sprawl out with the papers and watch the locals and their pooches stroll by. Despite being open a week or so at that stage, there were already some loyal caffeinistas who were in for their regular brew and chatting happily with Agi and Wilson whilst ensuring they left with a mouth watering toffee crusted, coconut custard filled light as air donut. I swear I could eat that custard with a spoon all day long.
The all day menu was a pleasure to read and left me with a serious decision to make as to what I was to have for lunch. There are exciting Asian influenced options like Matcha French toast, buttered miso mushrooms and deconstructed Peking duck salad. There are also sandwiches, bircher, eggs and more. To satisfy my sweet and savoury teeth I went for the smoked salmon hotcakes, when I am presented with 2 of my favourite ingredients in one dish it’s pretty hard to pass up. The cold smoked salmon was such high quality and beautifully presented on top of some fluffy, warm hot cakes. If I could have licked the plate, I would have.
It was time to head home and see the Baron but I could not turn up empty handed now could I? I mean when the cakes and cookies are right there at the counter what I am supposed to do?! That’s right, take some home. So off I went with two equally moreish cookies, the choc mint slice and the peanut butter and jelly. If you are avoiding gluten there are plenty of sans gluten baked goodies for you to choose from. Lovers of croissants will be pleased to hear they are from Noisette.
My second visit to No.84 was with the clear intention to introduce my burger loving friends to something a little different; the beef bulgogi burger. Oh yes, you may have seen my amazing burger eating feat at Café 51 of the waffle ensconced Death by Chocolate on my Insta account but on this occasion I wanted to give a Korean inspired burger a go complete with brioche bun, yuzo mayo and some very good shoe string French fries. This burger creation was certainly packed with flavor, a touch of spicy heat and dripping with juicy burger goodness. I was eagerly licking my fingers lest a drop be wasted.
So when you are on the 96 do make your next stop No. 84. In the meantime feast your eyes on their food tease Instagram account.
