A healthy little slice of Manhattan in the hustle of busy Flinders Lane, Laneway Greens has transformed this previous clothing store into a slick, boutique purveyor of handcrafted salads, smoothies, juices and bowls.
This deco-esque fit out, with floor to ceiling windows and set in a handsome sandstone building is a literal head turner. As I sat in the gorgeous window, with my buzzer, waiting for my gluten free Miso Glazed Salmon salad to be constructed, (I am a sucker for anything glazed in miso by the way), it was highly entertaining to watch people stopping in their tracks to see what this new comer to Flinders Lane is all about. The LG staff provide menus to nervous, neck craning would be diners who seem unsure on first approach. Once they are in though they are soon ordering, most opting for take away as seating is limited, 12 bench style seats at a counter top split along the front window and sidewall.
LG is all style. After a short wait my buzzer makes the sound we all wait for and I scurry from my seat over the to the white kitchen swing doors and out slides my salad in a beautiful Japanese ceramic bowl with a very welcome miso soup in an equally lovely Japanese ceramic cup. I pop myself back in the window seat and savour the virtuousness of ordering something so healthy that also tastes clean and delicious. People watching continues to be a fun sport while you inhale the healthy.
If salmon isn’t your thing, there are also vegan and vegetarian salads including a roasted cauliflower salad with baba ganoush and a beetroot salad 3 ways. Meat lovers can choose the wombok chicken slaw or the chargrilled beef. No time to chow down? LG has got you covered with awesome liquid refreshments. Cold pressed juices are on ice at the counter or order a freshly made vegan, gluten free smoothie. On another visit I went for the Kale and Kiwi, such a refreshing smoothie with avo, ginger and spinach. The menu is seasonal and changes accordingly. There are also muffins and breakfast chia bowls to grab and go for when you are on the run. Pre made bottled juices start at $4.50, smoothies are $10 and salads range from $14 to $16.50.
The price point may mean this won’t be your everyday salad stop but when you are craving a sophisticated and healthful salad ensconced in beautiful architecture with a side of people watching this will be your little hub.
