This place is soooooo good looking you’ll forget it's vegetarian.  Transformer is definitely the classier cousin of the well established and much loved Vegie Bar.  You could bring anyone here and they would be impressed, even your mum. Tucked away down Fitzroy’s Rose St you will find this beautifully converted space with exposed brick and gorgeous seasonal foliage.

There is plenty of seating, ranging from traditional tables dressed with quirky glassware and some very sleek lighting or the mercifully smoke free, white washed outdoor courtyard complete with some heating that will be very welcome in a Melbourne winter or any season in this fine city really.  My date and I chose the courtyard as we lapped up the last rays of this season’s sunshine.  Some fellow patrons had the right idea, kicking back with glasses of wine and savouring the afternoon.

The food is presented as stylishly as the fit out.  When I saw “Indian crumpets” on the menu I was intrigued and the really friendly and approachable waitress helped me to make the right decision to give them a try.  Having no point of reference other than the traditional good ol’ Aussie crumpet I wasn’t sure what to expect of the Indian version.  I can’t say I was complaining when they tasted more like a savory pancake, being the pancake lover that I am, and I can tell you that it won’t be the last time I order Indian crumpets.  These ones were paired nicely with a flavourful and ever so fresh salad of beans, tomato and corn.

My friend equally enjoyed her tofu and noodle dish.  Completely satisfied with our clean eating, meat free lunches we had no room for dessert but feel certain that we will have an opportunity to try them another time.  Perhaps when we come back with a few friends to try the sharing plates over dinner.   Transformer is exactly what meets the eye with no need for vegetables to be in disguise.
